Public Safety

The Churubusco community can rest easily at night knowing that some very highly trained professionals are protecting them each and every day. Whether it’s the middle of the night or the middle of the afternoon police, fire and EMS personnel are there to help.

A highly trained police force of 4 and an additional group of reserve officers police the streets morning, noon and night. John Hart, Town Marshal, has always taken great pride in how his officers work with the local community. Most of the officers have lived here their entire life and this helps them connect with the citizens when they need help. Combine their talent, skills, equipment and local connection and you’ll find a police department that is more than appreciated.

The police department, along with the Churubusco Town Council, recently organized a Churubusco Emergency Evacuation Plan which lists three nearby sites for those who need shelter during an emergency. Those sites include the Mason’s Lodge on the north side of town, St. John Bosco Catholic Church in the downtown area and the United Methodist Church on the north end of town. Residents will have access to the sites in case of tornadoes, flooding, fires or any other kind of disaster situation.

The Churubusco Fire Department consists of 30 men and women who volunteer all of their time helping protect the town. As volunteers, this group is on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days week, 365 days a year, which in turn means they leave their jobs, personal activities and even holiday gatherings to help those in their time of need. Highly trained and highly equipped, these men and women serve the community well.

Another all-volunteer organization helping serve those in their time of need is Whitley County EMS Medic 21. Their on-call status is a bit different than the fire department’s, but they too leave family functions and work to respond to emergency incidents. As a highly qualified, equipped and experienced group of individuals, Churubusco is certainly in good hands when emergencies arise.
